Our Story
How it all began…
As far back as Steve Schicketanz could remember, he always wanted to own a business. As a child, he had a successful lemonade stand, where he sold lemonade, worms, and frogs! Combining business with fun, was natural to Steve!
A few months out of high school, Steve began Top Hat Chimney Sweeps. The business grew over the next 2 years, and Steve eventually sold the business for a profit. At age 19, Steve and a business partner started Island Tropics, a health and fitness center. Unfortunately, the partnership soon dissolved. Steve closed the fitness center after only one year.
Soon after, Steve began a new company: Black Magic Chimney Sweeps (named after the “Black Magic Chimney Products”, a line of chimney supplies which he sold in his home). He began this new company solely as a chimney cleaning service, which he operated out of his home. Funds were very limited, so Steve built his new business by going door to door in the evenings, giving away free chimney inspections. The business grew and grew. Steve soon realized that low quality home heaters (stoves, inserts and fireplaces) were causing unsafe and unreliable home heat. Homeowners needed QUALITY stoves, inserts and fireplaces, and so in 1989, Black Magic Chimney Sweeps became Magic City Stoves & Fireplaces with its own new storefront.
Only one year later, Magic City Stoves & Fireplaces outgrew its first location, and moved into our present location at 426 S Center St. Throughout all these years, Steve has maintained the same passion, desire to serve others, and sense of fun, that he had in the beginning. He is unwavering in his commitment to sell ONLY the highest quality and most reliable products, paired with the very best service, and at fair prices.
